Look out for the Verified by Visa logo on your favourite websites. If you want to use your Visa card on a website that isn't offering Verified by Visa yet, then you should use these simple safeguards:
- Make sure that your card details will be encrypted securely before being sent across the internet-look for an unbroken key or lock at the bottom of your browser window or check the website addres, which should begin with https:// rather than http://.
- Shop with retailers you know about, or research them first to ensure they are reputable and reliable.
- Keep a record of your internet transactions, including the retailer's website address. Many online stores send customers e-mails summarising the purchase details - make sure you save or print these.
- Before buying, read the delivery and return policies that should be on the retailers's website. Can unsatisfactory items be sent back? If the items are faulty, can you get a refund or a credit note?
- The retailer's website should also have information about delivery arrangements and costs, currencies they accept and taxes that apply.
- Look for a telephone number or a e-mail address and note them down in case you have any queries.
Online shopping with MasterCard
MasterCard Card is the one card for your everyday purchasing needs. With more than 24.6 million acceptance locations worldwide, no card is accepted in more places and by more merchants. It also provides cardholders the ability to conduct safe, secure transactions. MasterCard continues to implement and enforce strict security features for online shopping. MasterCard continues to develop new security features, technologies and programs to protect the purchases you make every day.
Card Verification Code
The Card Validation Code 2 (CVC 2) is a three-digit code indent printed on the sinature panel of MasterCard cards. This added security measure enables a retailer to verify that the buyer has the actual card in-hand during a card-not-present transaction.
SSL
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a new technology, which many retailers use fo additional customer protections. Your personal card details are encrypted and transmitted between yourself and the online retailer via a special procedure. Many online shops already use SSL. You can recognise internet SSL protected sites via the security symbol (padlock) shown in the browser window or via the internet address which start with "https" instead of "http"
MasterCard SecureCode
MasterCard, along with your card-issuing bank, is concerned about the online security of its cardholders, MasterCard SecureCode enhances your current MasterCard card with a secret code to protect against unauthorized use of your card when you shop online at participating merchants. Each cardholder participating in the SecureCode program creates a unique personal code known only to the cardholder and the issuing bank. This code is requested during the checkout process at participating online stores verifying the purchaser is indeed the cardholder.
